Checklist: Vacation HVAC Prep

Whether you’re going away for a few days or a week or more for vacation, it’s important to make sure that your HVAC system is ready.Whether you’re going away for a few days or a week or more for vacation, it’s important to make sure that your HVAC system is ready. Use the following vacation HVAC prep tips to get your system ready before you leave your Portland home.

Replace Your Air Filter

If it’s been awhile since you changed your air filter, put in a new one before your vacation. This helps ensure that your HVAC system will be able to run efficiently while you’re away. If you have changed it recently, it doesn’t hurt to check it and make sure that it’s not dirty.

Raise Your Thermostat

You might be tempted to shut off your HVAC system if you’re going to be away from home. However, this isn’t recommended. Leaving your HVAC system on during your vacation helps keep your home from getting too warm and humid, which reduces the risk of mold growth. Before you leave, set your thermostat a few degrees higher than normal, and let it run while you’re out of town.

Invest in a Surge Protector

If the power goes out while you’re gone, your HVAC system is at risk of serious damage if there’s a power surge. Consider having a surge protector installed to lower this risk. An HVAC technician can help you choose the right surge protector for your system and install it for you.

Clear Away Debris from the Outdoor Unit

Vacation HVAC prep includes ensuring that there is no debris around your outdoor unit, so that air can flow through it easily. Get rid of weeds and other vegetation growing near this unit, and trim bushes and shrubs away from it.

Schedule Maintenance

Having routine HVAC maintenance done before you leave helps ensure that your system is in good condition. HVAC technicians can check for problems and take care of them promptly, so you can come home to a system that runs properly.
